Spiced Quinoa Porridge with Pear

Chilly mornings make you want to stay in bed – unless you have something really warm & yummy to look forward to for breakfast. How does a hot creamy quinoa porridge with chai spices and sweet sauteed pear sound? It’s gluten free, sugar free, high protein and vegan friendly.  

Slippers on – to the kitchen!

For a quicker morning cook-up, you can put all the porridge ingredients in a pot and leave it sit overnight ready to put on heat in the morning.


Serves 2.

For the porridge you need:

1/2 cup quinoa (ensure you rinse it first to get rid of the saponins)

1 + 1/4 cup milk of choice (we like almond or coconut)

1 tsp raw cacao powder

1/4 tsp each (ground) nutmeg, cardamom, cloves

1/4 tsp minced or finely grated ginger

1/2 tsp cinnamon

few drops vanilla extract

pinch of salt

>Put all the ingredients in a saucepan in no particular order. Bring to gentle boil then allow to simmer covered for approximately 15mins, stirring occasionally. As soon as the quinoa seeds are translucent-ish all the way through, they are ready.

Whilst the porridge is cooking prepare your fruit topping.


For the pear you need:

1 bosc pear (the brown-skinned variety)

1 tbs coconut oil

>Heat coconut oil in a frypan, finely chop pear and sautee until soft and golden.


Top the porridge with the pear pieces and voila! Add a bit more milk to your bowl and sweeten with a little honey if you like.

We have also tried this with a peeled green apple and it worked wonderfully.
